What are the disadvantages of Tai Chi?

Disadvantages of Tai Chi

Are there any? I have been practicing Tai Chi daily for over 28 years. I have not found any disadvantages to Tai Chi as of yet. I have found that Tai Chi has been a positive addition to my life. It has even taught me how to deal with life's stresses and even cure my anxiety. Overall I cannot state how much I believe everyone should have a daily Tai Chi practice. I feel young children should learn about anxiety and how to cope with stress in school.

There are so many people suffering from anxiety disorders today. It is most likely because they don't realize anxiety is normal. It only gets out of hand when a person's nerves are sensitized. People need to learn how to react to what they perceive as stress. Tai Chi teaches this.

If forced to point out any disadvantage to Tai Chi, it would be learning a Tai Chi form from an unqualified teacher. Then your Tai Chi form would be missing most of the health benefits. When you realize your Tai Chi form is missing essential principles. You would now have to re-learn a new Tai Chi form from a qualified instructor. Don't learn Tai Chi from an unqualified teacher. There is too much fake Tai Chi practiced. Imagine if the studies showing Tai Chi health benefits were done on proficient Tai Chi players who perform Tai Chi correctly and live a balanced lifestyle. People would then follow the art in droves.

As you probably know, Tai Chi is a martial art. Another disadvantage would be thinking you have learned self-defense. Just because you can perform a Tai Chi form doesn't mean you can now protect yourself in a self-defense situation. Please take the time to learn Tai Chi from a qualified teacher. Make sure the teacher understands the martial aspect of Tai Chi. The teacher, in my opinion, doesn't have to be proficient in Tai Chi as self-defense. What the teacher should be aware of is how to use the ground. Proper use of the earth and correct body alignment is essential.

Another disadvantage to Tai Chi is the advice that you should not lift weights. Tai Chi is about a balanced lifestyle. Tai Chi means balancing your body, mind, and spirit. Strength training is essential to strengthening your muscles and increasing bone density as you age. Most internet trolls point out that Tai Chi is fake. They say Tai Chi will not protect you in a self-defense situation. I say learn self-defense like boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, or better yet, a combination of the three. Lift weights and be strong. A strong person is less likely to be bullied.

Remember, even if you learn self-defense and are not a fighter, it doesn't mean that you can protect yourself. Once you are physically strong and are confident, you are less likely to be bullied. Hopefully, dealing with life's stress is the biggest bully you will ever face. Tai Chi will teach you how to react to stressful situations.

Disadvantages of learning and practicing Tai Chi

Tai Chi is difficult to learn on your own.

A knowledgeable in-person teacher is essential to learning authentic Tai Chi.

Fake Tai Chi

Unfortunately, there is a chance of learning a Tai Chi dance that is missing all the health benefits of this great art. Choose your teacher wisely.

Tai Chi Can Hurt Your Knees

If you turn your knee while there is weight on your leg, it can hurt your knees.

Are there any other disadvantages to Tai Chi? Maybe, but the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.
